iRobot Roomba j7+ Review: Dog dodging robot vacuum cleaner is the best in its class | T3

The new Roomba J7+ is one of the best automatic emptying robots that money can buy

Although the excellent Roborock sweeping robot S7 is still the king of hybrid robot vacuum mops, J7 is straightforward and has no nonsense vacuuming. Yes, its automatic trash emptying system is very noisy in about 5 seconds, but this is the only weakness among many wonderful features, including the ability to dodge solid dogs. Highly praised.

Ideal for hard floors with carpet

This is a one-sentence review of iRobot Roomba J7+: If you can't afford the most expensive iRobot, this slightly reduced model is more than enough. It is one of the best robot vacuum cleaners you can buy.

After witnessing the result of the unfortunate incident between the robot vacuum cleaner and the willful dog poop in my home, I am more eager to wear gloves on the new iRobot Roomba J7+, because according to the marketing promotion, J7 can "identify and avoid" pet trash , Even with the support of the pet owner’s official promise (POOP), iRobot will replace any Roomba j7+ that cannot avoid solid pet waste. come on.

In fact, this robot not only circumvents poo, it is said that it can also avoid cables and other objects. This is another reason why I have been eager to try it, because my house has more cables than substations, and there are more around. I don't want to mention dog toys. There are many carpets scattered on the hardwood floor of my house. I also have carpets upstairs. In one bedroom, the carpets are too deep, otherwise my amazing Roomba S9 refuses to enter.

As mentioned above, I also have two dogs and three cats—plus the inevitable voles brought by some cats. Well, there are a lot of hair in this house. Imagine a sofa with curtains and lots of furniture glued to the outside, I think I can evaluate Roomba J7 well.

Therefore, without further ado, I will install the new charging dock in a small space that iRobot says is too narrow for it, install it against the wall, and then I will open my iRobot app and sync it. I will do this without reading the instructions, mainly because I don't know where I put it.

So come on J7+, I am deeply impressed.

If you live in the UK, go to Amazon, where the J7+ is priced at £899.99, or the same in the iRobot store. Amazon US is currently out of stock, so you'd better go directly to iRobot's US store, where you can buy one for $849.99. Or maybe Wal-Mart, the price of J7+ is 99 cents lower.

Sadly, in Australia, the J7+ appears thin on the ground. It's too thin, we can't find a store with stock. This shows that iRobot has not yet arranged to launch J7+ in Oz.

I like the design of this robovac very much. It is quite compact and elegant in style, with a metal finish and an intuitive single-button design. The diameter of the robot itself is 33 cm, although the length of the double-ribbed rubber roller installed in the center is only 17 cm, while the more expensive S9 is 23 cm. This means that J7 will require a longer cleaning run than S9. In addition, since its battery life is not long, it may need to return to the Clean Base charging cradle two or three times if it scans a large area.

J7 can be purchased with or without a cleaning base. The cleaning base is the name of iRobot's automatic trash emptying system. If you buy without a base, the model is J7, and if you use the Clean Base, it is J7+. After the cleaning base is in place, whenever the J7's small internal dustbin is full, the robot will return to the cleaning base, where a powerful fan sucks all debris into the large disposable AllergenLock dust bag of the cleaning base. If the robot has not completed its cleaning session, it will roll to where it stopped.

J7+’s stylish Clean Base is 34 cm high, 32 cm wide, and 41 cm deep. It is shorter and wider than the previous iRobot model. It has an attractive black pinstripe overlay and is equipped with a leather cover. Stylish Scandinavian appearance. It is undoubtedly the most attractive dumpster terminal on the market, but it does have a negative factor, which you can read below.

I have set up a lot of robot vacuum cleaners in the past, this is definitely a breeze. Just find a permanent place for it, make sure the robot is in its charging dock, turn it on and launch the excellent iRobot app. Now add J7, after entering your wifi password, it will connect in a few minutes and you can start using it. I have zero problems in this area-everything is normal.

If you already have other iRobot products in your home, this app allows you to easily change units by quickly tapping the phone screen. For technology phobias, this model is easy to set up.

The iRobot application provides a series of easy-to-use functions that help improve the efficiency of J7+

Like its i7 and S9 similar products, Roomba J7 will automatically draw a house map when sweeping the floor. Just let it do its thing, and after a few cleaning sessions, it will generate a map in the app. You can customize the map by creating partitions and room names, as well as other items such as coir doormats and dogs. Water splashing around the water bowl and other restricted areas. In order to map faster with less battery usage, just select "mapping run" and J7 will navigate without using the vacuum function.

J7 is very organized in drawing house maps. It uses the front camera and iRobot's PrecisionVision navigation software to accurately map the entire floor, no matter how messy it is. In fact, I even copied the demo scenes that some of the iRobot designers showed me when I attended the Zoom conference recently. I put a long Dyson box in the middle of my open kitchen/lounge instead of J7 trying to find a way around obstacles, it seemed to think it was "messed up" and quickly started to turn to the edges of the surrounding boxes, Then enter another room. In other words, it simply bypassed the issue without reconsidering it.

J7's defecation system is in operation

One of the main selling points of J7 is that it can avoid obstacles such as wires, toys and even dog dung. Its Genius 3.0 home intelligence software probably played an important role in this regard, because its database obviously has a bunch of images, such as wires and several shapes of dog poop, so it can actually recognize different objects when it approaches. It will even send notifications to users asking whether the obstacle in question is a permanent device or the result of family laziness.

According to iRobot, “Cleaning tasks will not interrupt your life, because Roomba j7+ will learn your habits to provide a personalized schedule, even when the pollen count in your area is high or pets are moulting season, additional cleaning is recommended "I personally have not received any such advice, but I don't care.

J7+ rolled into the trash can, and all the dirt and dust was sucked into the disposable bag.

The motor in the Clean Base is very powerful, so it can usually completely empty the J7's mini trash can at one time, which is impressive. If the hair ball gets stuck somewhere in the straw, it will suck again until the obstruction is cleared. If you have a pet, you will actually hear a "whoop" sound because the problematic hair is sucked into the Clean Base dust bag.

However, unlike the premium S9+ model, which is quite quiet when emptying the trash, the J7 is very loud. The sound is too loud, you really have to put your fingers in your ears. It's like a tweeter chainsaw mixed with a dentist's bit, a jet plane at takeoff, and someone scraping a blackboard. Thankfully, the noise only lasted about 5 seconds, but if you just put your baby on the bed while the J7 is cleaning, please keep this in mind.

iRobot recommends placing a clean base where there is a gap of at least 1.5 feet (46 cm) on both sides, but my test model has only 1 inch of space on one side, and a radiator with a 3 inch gap on the other side, and there is no Problems get in and out of its garage.

If you have a pet, please empty the bag approximately once a month, if you don’t have one, later

Roomba J7 should put at least one month's worth of debris and hair in the Clean Base disposable bag, you will not look around for another one because the spare part is placed on the left side under the same lid. There are no statistics available for the volume of AllergenLock bags, but rest assured, they are enough to hold approximately 40 loads. In other words, you don’t need to worry about changing bags for at least one month. When they are available, three may be £23, and the J7 bag itself is not cheap, although you can buy cheaper copies on eBay and they will work well.

Although the suction power of the J7 is not as powerful as that of the flagship S9, it turns out that it is very capable of collecting everything I threw in its path. It is also very quiet when it is running-at least until it empties the trash can (see above). The J7's 3-level cleaning system is equipped with some impressive punches, and has a patented double multi-surface rubber roller that can beat the carpet to release deep-rooted dust and dirt, while its edge sweeping brush removes loose dirt from the wall Pull up and enter its hungry suction port.

The J7 is actually better on hard carpets than the low S9, which almost always messes up the carpet during the cleaning process. When J7 detects the carpet, it will turn off its rubber rollers and work on the carpet, and then continue to vacuum-its job is not to overly mess up the edges. This aspect left a very deep impression on me, because for me, carpets are the main nemesis of robot vacuum cleaners.

J7 also performs very well on ordinary carpets, although like S9, it is difficult to make any progress on very, very deep pile carpets. In other words, none of the robovacs I have tested can handle piles of this level, because their wheels sink too deep into the pile, preventing the rollers from turning freely.

I have to say that the battery performance of Roomba J7 is not so good, so it may need to stop midway cleaning, while improving itself in the rest of the work. I won't say that this is a big problem, as long as you have a medium-sized space and you are not in a hurry. In contrast, Roomba S9 runs longer on a single charge.

If you have also purchased iRobot Braava Jet M6 robomop, you can synchronize the two. When J7 finishes its work, it tells Braava Jet to start mopping the ground. result? Rustic floor

One particularly cool thing about this robot is that it can work with iRobot's efficient Braava Jet M6 mopping robot, which you can read in our full review. Basically, once J7 completes its vacuum task, it will send a message to Braava to continue mopping the floor. You can buy J7+ and Braava Jet M6 in bundles for £1,600.

The iRobot app is well thought out and very easy to use. It provides the option of dividing rooms on the map and naming them. It also allows users to create "favorites", such as cleaning only the kitchen, kitchen and lounge, or the entire downstairs area. As with most robovacs, it is easy to set up a weekly schedule, so it will only be cleaned when you are usually away. With the onboard iRobot Genius 3.0 software, you can even choose to set the robot to start cleaning when you leave and stop when you return home.

If you want to buy a stylish, high-end robotic vacuum cleaner that is self-adjusting and very effective in keeping the room clean on a regular basis, then Roomba J7+ is a worthy competitor. Although it makes a noise when emptying the trash can, the J7 vac itself is very quiet when running, is very simple to use, and is full of clever mapping functions. It is also very suitable for pet owners.

Looking for an alternative? If money is not an issue, try the iRobot Roomba S9+ flagship model that sucks like a mollusk. Or you can read the excellent Roborock S7 in our Roborock S7 review, logically enough.
