It doesn’t take much for the act of love to cross boundaries and become unmanageable

One of the best parts of keeping a dog is to let them rush towards you when you arrive or go home, or to see them staring at you with devout eyes and wagging tails. However, this act of love does not take much time to cross boundaries and become impoverished and unmanageable.

Constantly complaining, barking, or grabbing you with your paws, hoping to get attention, are all signs of a dog in need. Fortunately, Gretta Ford, a certified dog trainer and behaviorist, says that there are four simple steps you can take to end the behavior that is needed:

"It sounds obvious," Gretta said, "but the first thing you should do is to ensure that your dog gets reasonable attention and interaction with you every day. As a social species, dogs need this, but when they are busy It's easy to forget!"

Gretta said that in addition to walking the dog regularly, you should also spend a few minutes a day talking to them, petting them, and playing games like tug-of-war or throwing a ball if possible.

It's easy to fall into a trap, wait until your dog asks you to pay attention before giving it to them. But Greta said that doing so may make the problem worse: "It's very important to get in touch with your dog before they do a lot of attention-seeking behavior," she said. "Otherwise, when they are'good,' you may inadvertently ignore them, and then give them a lot of attention when they do things you find annoying. Doing so will only make things worse."

"If you know that you are going to be busy with something and can't give your dog any attention during that time, such as when you are on the phone at work, please solve the problem in advance by giving your dog something good to keep busy," Gray Ta said. She recommends giving your dog a chew, puzzle feeder or filled King Kong at these times to make them happy.

Write down a list of all the things your dog does to attract attention. This may include barking, grabbing you with your paws, sitting looking at you, pushing you, leaning your head on you, giving you toys, complaining, etc.

Then, Gretta recommends that you divide the list into two categories: "effective" for behaviors that you think is acceptable, and "not working" for behaviors that you really don't like.

"Once you do this, try to make sure that the actions on the'valid' list will attract attention, and the actions on the'invalid' list will never attract attention," she explained. "This way your dog has an acceptable way to ask for a stroke, but the really annoying behavior will diminish over time."
