Seattle, hold on to your cat.

Viral videos of people stealing packages from porches are common these days, but the Amazon Ring Camera captured a more unusual scene this week in our side yard near Ballard in Seattle: our neighbor’s cat and an urban coyote Jumping to survive is very hot on his tail.

In addition to the escape plot, the video quality is quite good. Ring's infrared camera captured this scene in the dark in black and white, and gave a clear and eerie glimpse of the coyote sniffing the ground and assessing the situation after the cat had almost escaped. Watching the video, we were surprised-the cat was lucky-the coyote did not jump over the fence.

Coyote sightings are becoming more common in areas of our city, which are close to the train corridors and green belts that extend along with the Golden Garden Park.

For those of you who might be wondering about the camera, this was shot with the third-generation (2019) Ring Stick Up Cam for $100. Even when the sun is scarce in Seattle, we are fortunate to use a $50 portable Ring solar panel to power the battery.

For those who care about this cat, our neighbor reported that he was frightened by the close contact, but other aspects were fine.

GeekWire explored what drove the rise of Bellevue, Washington, a fast-growing technology center east of Seattle. In this 4-part editorial series sponsored by MN Custom Homes, we will explore the key issues that shape this ever-changing city.
