The best canine competitors from 23 states and several dog breeds will compete in several challenges such as agility courses, a head-to-head 30-weave race, a dog diving event, a freestyle flying disc event and a Jack Russell terrier race. Well-behaved dogs on leashes are invited to attend and watch. In addition to the dog action, there will also be a biergarten, items for sale and appearances and giveaways from the St. Louis City SC soccer team. Is it a symphony, a song cycle or what? Mahler superstitiously avoided calling “Das Lied von der Erde” (“The Song of the Earth”) a symphony so as to avoid “the curse of the ninth” — the notion that no major composer since Beethoven had completed more than nine symphonies. Whatever its designation, the piece is one of Mahler’s greatest works, written during a time of great despair for the composer, yet containing great beauty. SLSO Music Director Stéphane Denève conducts, and the two vocal parts are performed by mezzo-soprano Kelley O’Connor and tenor Clay Hilley. The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and the Muny join together to celebrate the legacy and music of Stephen Sondheim. The composer and lyricist died at age 91 last November, leaving behind a legacy of profound and sophisticated works that transformed the American musical. Ben Whiteley conducts the orchestra while a cast that includes Ben Davis, Bryoinha Marie, Matthew Scott, Emily Skinner and Elizabeth Stanley present classic material from Sondheim’s “Merrily We Roll Along,” “Company,” “Sweeney Todd,” “Into the Woods” and others. The 14th season for the Chamber Music Society of St. Louis brings a change of venue. Its concerts will be held in the E. Desmond Lee Concert Hall at 560 Music Center. Native Missourian David Barclay Moore now lives in Brooklyn, where the hero of his new book, "Holler of the Fireflies," lives. A novel for readers 10 and up, "Fireflies" follows a boy who learns all sort of things at STEM camp in Appalachian West Virginia, where in addition to science and engineering there are lessons in racism and hidden agendas. But the boy, Javari, also learns about a different side of the holler. Moore is also the author of "The Stars Beneath Our Feet," which won the Coretta Scott King–John Steptoe Award for New Talent. By Jane Henderson

Adventure and fantasy novels for middle school readers come from two authors with strong local ties. Ridley Pearson, the author of more than 40 books, introduces "Disney Cautionary Tales," while George Jreije celebrates a new series, "Shad Hadid and the Alchemists of Alexandria." Pearson lived in St. Louis when he wrote "Peter and the Starcatchers" with Dave Barry and several other series.
