He can’t pound a gavel, but he sure looked doggone snazzy sitting in City Hall chambers with his tux and ear-to-ear smile.

Keeks is a service dog for resident Mike Keeney, and he is Reno’s mayor for the day. He was accompanied by his personal assistant, rescue chihuahua Lil Bet.

“I want to thank you all very much for the honor you’ve bestowed upon Keeks. He’s — hey, sit down!” Keeney said during public comment at the meeting.

Options Veterinary Care, a local nonprofit clinic that serves pets from low-income families, arranged his stint in politics.

Keeney lost his leg to diabetes, and he adopted Keeks as a puppy in 2018. He praised Options Veterinary for all they’ve done for him and his dogs.

“I cannot say enough about Options. They are wonderful. They take great care of our pets,” he said. “The dog actually likes going to the vets.”

Bonnie Brown, a member of Options’ governance committee, said that Options was founded in 2020 to serve residents who can’t afford vet bills.

“We help keep beloved pets with the people who love them,” she said.

And Keeney does adore Keeks. He said that he spends long hours teaching him new tricks and tossing his the frisbee.

“He absolutely lives, and I mean lives, for his Frisbee. It’s just the be all end all of toys,” Keeney said

Human Mayor Hillary Schieve was hoping Keeks could perform another trick.

“Keeks, the first thing I want you to do is go answer all my emails,” she said.
