The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has issued an emergency recall for a teether toy for babies due to the high risk of suffocation.

Online retailer Amazon is recalling the "Mushroom Teether Toys for Newborn Babies, Toddlers, Infants, Relieve Sore Gum – BPA-Free Chew Toy," sold on its platform since 24 September 2021.

A safety issue has been identified where the mushroom head of the soother can flip around creating a very tight suction which causes a suffocation risk.

There are around 40 affected products in the Republic of Ireland.

The CCPC said parents should stop using the soothers immediately and contact Amazon or other place of purchase for a refund.

Alerted to the CCPC via the EU-wide RAPEX product safety information sharing system, this recall represents the first emergency measure notice of 2022, a safety warning status reserved for extremely high-risk products, including those that pose a serious fatality risk.
